Lectio Divina
a simple and thought-provoking way to engage with God's word
Have you heard of a practice called 'Lectio Divina'?
This is a Latin phrase which means 'divine reading' and has been practised by Christians since the time of the early church. This practice involves choosing a passage from the Bible, reading it, and meditating upon it. You may repeat these steps a few times before praying and then contemplating what God's word may be saying to you. This is a practice which can be done by yourself in your own private prayer and scripture study, or in the setting of a home group, or even at church.
In the evening of Sunday 30th January a few of us gathered in the sanctuary at church to read and discuss the Parable of the Sower, following the steps of Lectio Divina. We read both the NIV and Message versions of the text then meditated and prayed over the text. Trevor provided a few questions which led to an interesting and thought-provoking group discussion. Keep an eye out for the next time such an evening may be happening – I would recommend turning up and taking part.
he next Lectio Divina evening is at 6:30pm on Sunday 6 March, during which we’ll be reflecting on Mark 9:2–13, ‘The Transfiguration’. Mark Ridgway
