Introducing our new BMS Church Partner
Joy Ransom

joy2-e1528990157284Did you know that Selsdon Baptist Church isn’t just part of the UK Baptist family, but that we also support churches and development projects in over 20 countries across the world? One of the ways we do this is through our relationship with BMS World Mission. BMS stands for Baptist Missionary Society, an organisation with an illustrious history that stretches back to its foundation in 1792 and William Carey’s travel to Calcutta, India, the following year.

BMS’s current vision is focused on three priorities: to reach the most marginalised, least evangelised and people on the move. This means an emphasis on countries in the bottom half of the global ‘Multidimensional Poverty Index’ (MPI), countries with less than 5 per cent self-declared Christian identity in census data and support for people who are displaced from or within their home country.

BMS raises a significant proportion of its funds from British Baptist churches. Each congregation also partners with an individual or family working overseas. Last year, our previous church partners returned to live in the UK. In recent months, our Global Action Team have been in discussion with BMS about finding a new mission worker who we can support prayerfully and practically. It’s exciting that we are now journeying with Joy Ransom, who works in Nepal with Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC)'s teacher training programme (EQUIP), training local teachers in rural, remote areas of Nepal. Joy previously served with BMS in Nepal for seven years, from 1989–1996, and returned as a volunteer in 2015. For the past 19 years Joy has worked as a teacher in Scotland but returned to Nepal in 2019 to serve long term.

You can find out more about Joy’s ministry, and a link to regularly updated prayer letters, at A current priority is the construction of two IT labs in remote areas, with solar panels making possible the generation of electricity to power the computers and servers in each location. Joy’s latest prayer letter also conveys vividly the extreme and challenging conditions in which many people live in rural Nepal, sometimes lacking basic items such as blankets to protect them from the cold of winter.

Please hold Joy and her important ministry in your prayers, and please pray also for the teachers and children who are supported by KISC.
