Planet Care: Local and SBC Recycling

In the May edition of the Selsdon Gazette there is a welcome article on additional recycling collections, showing that progress is being made by the large supermarket chains with regard to their taking more responsibility for previously unrecycled plastics used in wrapping their products.

Many supermarket customers know about the recycling collection bins for unwanted plastic carriers, bread bags and some fruit and veg bags, which are located in the larger stores. The range of plastics accepted for recycling by some of those supermarkets has been extended. According to information on the website Sainsbury’s in Selsdon, Tesco in Purley, and the Co-op stores in Hamsey Green, Shirley and New Addington, now collect the following flexible plastics:

  • Baby, pet food, detergent and cleaning pouches
  • Biscuits and chocolate wrapping
  • Bread bags
  • Cereal liners
  • Cheese, fish and meat wrapping
  • Crisp and sweet bags
  • Delivery bags
  • Frozen food bags
  • Multi-pack wrapping
  • Plastic carrier bags
  • Plastic film lids
  • Salad, pasta, and rice bags
  • Toilet roll wrapping
Forestdale Shopping Centre recycling facility will take:
  • Food pots and tubs
  • Glue sticks
  • Margarine tubs
  • Plant pots
  • Plastic trays
  • Yoghurt pots
It might be helpful to cut out this information for guidance at home, and pin it somewhere prominent in our kitchens as a reminder that making use of these additional recycling possibilities will help to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

I’d be very grateful if at SBC we could collect these extra plastics in the church kitchens whenever food, snacks and drinks are served. In the upstairs kitchen there is a cupboard marked Recycling, next to the dishwasher, where these materials can be left, and in the downstairs kitchen there is a small, white swing bin. Please scrape all food remains into the food waste bin and empty out packets thoroughly before adding plastics to the recycling.
Thank you.
